Amsterdam, 12 February 2026 – The Federatie Afro Diaspora Netwerk (FADN) expresses its serious concern regarding recent developments affecting the Saramaccan communities in the Interior of Suriname. According to reports, the Korps Politie Suriname (KPS), in cooperation with the Nationaal Leger, is preparing to proceed with the forced eviction of Indigenous and Tribal communities without prior consultation or adequate notice.
FADN calls upon the authorities in Suriname to respect the rights, safety, and cultural integrity of the Saramaccan community, in accordance with national and international human rights obligations, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and relevant provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
“FADN stands in full solidarity with the Tribal communities and supports their legitimate efforts to protect their territory, culture, and future,” said Mr. Leeuwin, Chair of FADN.
The organization urges the Government of Suriname to engage in transparent dialogue with representatives of the communities and to carefully reconsider any measures that could cause irreparable harm. Furthermore, FADN calls upon international bodies, including the United Nations, to monitor the situation and ensure that the rights of the Saramaccan community are fully respected.
